Garda Síochána na hÉireann

"Guardians of the Peace of Ireland",  is the Police for in the Republic of Ireland

Policing in Ireland began with the Dublin Police Act, 1786. The Irish Constabulary was established in 1822  along with the Dublin  Metropolitan Police established in 1836.  The Irish Constabulary was given Royal accent and became the Royal Irish Constabulary .  With the War of Independence and Partition,  in 1922 the Royal Irish Constabulary was disbanded and the Civic Guard was established. The Civic Guard was later renamed the Garda Síochána and in 1925 it merged with the Dublin Metropolitan Police to create one police force.

In it's Centenary Year, a special centenary Medal (presented to all Garda Officers - serving and retired) and a Coin (presented to all Garda Staff) was commissioned.  The Coin was kindly gifted by the Commissioner Dew Harris
